Once on the ship the scientists that were active from the start were the bio-geo-chemists. They are meassuring the particles that are falling down from the water surface to the ocean ground, thus giving an estimation among others, how much CO2 is contained in the water body. One of their tools is a sediment trap. For one year a giant funnel is placed in the water column, collecting particles for every month. These sediment traps are captured and released every time the RV is making its trip to the Indian Ocean.
