Reconstruction of an Early Iron Age fortification
The open-air museum in Oerlinghausen near Bielefeld was the first of its kind in the world. On the grounds, you’ll find reconstructed dwellings from the Paleolithic period to the early Middle Ages. I found the exhibition on ancient clothing especially interesting—not only does it present replicas, but it also shows how these garments were made back then. There are also working replicas of furnaces that bring the ancient history of metallurgy to life. The pigs and goats living in the museum will easily steal your heart. But the coolest thing is that every weekend, different living history enthusiasts come to the museum, making the exhibitions truly come alive. And of course, the AFM Oerlinghausen lies in the magnificent scenery of the Teutoburg Forest, which makes the experience even more special.
