A coot nesting

A coot (a black water bird) is nesting 3 chicks and 4 unhatched eggs underneath (bottom right corner of photo). Its partner is out foraging for food and the small chicks emerge enthusiastically every time it returns with a beak full of food to feed them. The Spinner camera shows off the context of its urban surroundings perfectly.

This bird has made Amsterdam city centre’s 17th century canal ring (designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO) its home. In 2013, the city celebrates the 400-year anniversary of the canal ring, which consists of a network of interconnecting waterways.
