My Favorite Holiday Used to Be the 4th of July
4th of July is a one page film I made to see how a sound mix looks with a movie shot on the Lomokino. My most personal film yet, 4th of July is a precursor to the upcoming Stacy, the Jungle Girl filming in early March 2012. 4th of July was filmed at the beautiful Bark Park in Honolua on Maui.
My Favorite Holiday Used to be the 4th of July is a film for anyone who’s lost someone too soon, literally of figuratively. Stacy says goodbye, and makes her peace with the fact that she’ll always remember the person she lost, but that it won’t keep her from doing all of the wonderful things ahead of her in life. For anyone who’s never experienced this type of loss, I truly hope you never do, but everyone who’s lost anything should be able to relate to this story.
On the west side of Maui if you want film processed, you need to go the big chain Pharmacy. Well, in this case, they screwed up about 4 out of 10 of my rolls including a chemical stain down a whole roll. I was leaning towards going B&W already, but considering one roll was magenta, I decided a nostalgic look was the way to go. This was again shot on plain ol’ Fuji color 200 film.
I recorded the sound with the H4N Sound recorder, a shotgun mic, and a zeppelin. Even in horrendous wind conditions Stacy’s dialogue came out so clear, I used an audio distortion filter in final cut to add to the old timey feel.
I am thankful once again to have beautiful music from the Shivers, which they generously let people use for free, so thank you. I hope you all enjoy my new film, and are excited as I am for the next one. Aloha.
A note on the upcoming dark comedy, Stacy, the Jungle Girl, which will be filming in Maui in March 2012: Accomplished professional sound mixer Joe Stillwater has just signed on to the project. This means Stacy, the Jungle Girl will have a proper sound mix from a visionary in the field. If you are in Maui, and are interested in getting involved send me a message or e-mail, and we’ll talk. Mahalo.
