Newcomer of the Week: Mélodie (@loute0101)

“Lomography is my new obsession, so beware!” quips lomographer Mélodie, or @loute0101 in the community, on her future photography plans. Her enthusiasm for film photography all started with a Diana F+, which she found collecting dust on her sweetheart’s shelf, and is now being fueled by the Lomo’Instant Wide and LC-A+. In this interview, our featured community newcomer shares how going analog opened her eyes to a whole new world.

Mélodie aka @loute0101

Location: Bruxelles, Belgium

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

My name is Mélodie. I’m turning 25 in a couple months and I’m an interior architect who works as a retail designer in an agency. I’m a complete beginner in Lomography and shooting with analog cameras in general but I’m really enjoying it every time I take a new picture. I don’t really know what I’m doing or where this new passion will lead me but I’m looking forward to it! It’s so exciting to be a part of this community.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

First of all, I fell in love with the Diana F+ two years ago. My boyfriend had one and the poor baby was waiting all day long on the shelf like a plant. One day, I bought new films and started to experiment with it. A whole new world appeared before me—-the instant pictures (with the instant back), double exposures, fisheyes and all the magic of lomographs!

I always liked photography but never experienced using analog cameras before. I felt that it’s the right moment to begin. A few weeks ago, I decided to buy the Lomo’Instant’wide Portobello Road. At the same time, I discovered the Lomography community. I wish I had known it before, but now I’m here and I won’t be gone any time soon.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

Rule #6: Don’t think. This rule really stands out among the others and that’s probably the reason why I have so many misfires. Last month, I received the LC-A+ for my birthday (and during its birthday month too by the way) so I’m planning to apply Rule #1 (Take your camera everywhere you go.) more and more.

In this digital age, why still film?

I like that it’s unique on its own way. You have one chance to take the picture you want and then you have to wait to discover if you captured it! With digital cameras you take thousands of pictures that you’ll never or barely look at again. I wanted to get back to the roots. Even if I fail sometimes, I’m always happy with the result. That’s the most important thing for me.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

I think it will be the LC-A+ very quickly. The perspective to keep it in my pocket all day long and have the opportunity to shoot anywhere, anytime fills me with joy! Besides that I just received the first pictures I took with it and I’m really surprised and pleased with the result!

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

If I say all of them you’ll believe me? [Laughs] Of course it will take me some time but why not dream a little bit? The next Lomography camera I’m planning to get though is the Supersampler Black Panther! I love the way that the picture is separated vertically in four. Not the “classic way” but side by side. I can’t wait to try it!

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

I can’t say I live by any song, book or movie but the ones I would choose right now would be:

Song: “The Skye Boat Song” and movies soundtracks in general (Bear McCreary, James Horner, Alexandre Desplat, Danny Elfman, John Williams, Hans Zimmer)

Book: Hell from Lolita Pill

Movie: Memories of a Geisha or Moonrise Kingdom

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

There’s so many I can’t tell. Maybe these photos from @robertofiuza and @lzyrich.

I don’t try it enough but double exposure photographs is something that I really adore, as well as shooting reflection (in water or elsewhere). I really want to experiment with these techniques more and become better at it. So until that moment, I’ll just dream. I can’t really say why. Maybe it’s the fact that you never really know the result you’ll get. I love the surprises the come with shooting on film and the fact that you’ll never get that same picture again. I just love it!

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

Not really. I have really liked the work from @lawypop recently (double exposures still) and Lucie Sassiat’s Kerr Marie. There are so many talented photographers out there that it is nearly impossible to choose just one. Sadly, it’s hard to remember everyone, too.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

To discover new lomographs and lomographers every day, every week… To share my works even if I do it mostly for fun. And of course, read the futures articles on the magazine. I’d also like to explore new possibilities, cameras, films, accessories, lenses…everything! Lomography is my new obsession, so beware!

Thank you Mélodie for sharing your thoughts with us! Welcome to the community and we’re looking forward to seeing your future work!
