Yuri Teplov

Name: Yuri Teplov
LomoHome: @yurlo
Location: Tomsk, Russian Federation

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I am 26 years old. I work as a driver for a small company that is engaged in a computer technology business. All my life, I have lived in the cold edge of Siberia. When I was 9 years old, I started taking photos with a film camera from my grandmother. This camera only had an automatic mode. I shot one film with it and forgot about film photography, that is, until 2014 when my friend gave me his Fed 5B with an Industar 61 l/d lens.

As time passes, technology grows, but I always go back to film for its special charm. I like to explore cities and show its different sides. I use different cameras such as the Fed 5B, Smena 8M and Lomo LC-A. In photography, I mostly prefer urban landscapes but I also do experiments from time to time.

How did you find the Community and who or what convinced you to join?

Basically, I was looking for a place on the Internet where it would be possible to share my photos, receive adequate criticism from the masters in this matter, look at other people’s work, and improve my skills. I am a novice user but I’m sure there is a lot of interesting things ahead for me in this community.

Which among the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography do you apply in your everyday life?

I read all the rules and I like the first rule—Take your camera everywhere you go—the most. I already experienced going on a long trip or evening walk in the hood without a camera and I really regret it.

In general, rules are created to be broken, so I also enjoy the tenth rule: Forget about the rules.

In this digital age, why do you still shoot on film?

First of all, film can educate you. You can take a thousand shots with a digital camera and choose the best one afterwards. With film, everything is different and you begin to appreciate every shot.

Second, I love waiting for the results of my film roll and not just click and instantly see the picture. I like how the bright and vibrant colors of film convey the atmosphere of the captured moment!

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?

Fed 5. It is absolutely manual and is very reliable because of its metal body. I can say that it is indestructible, which is important for a person with an active lifestyle. There’s this story wherein one Russian tourist dropped the same camera model from a viewing platform of the Eiffel Tower. But still the camera worked as it should. This camera also takes beautiful images.

Any song or movie you live by?

I was very inspired by the creativity of MF Doom. His work [1, 2] is unusual and offers an interesting view of things. It represents creativity without any borders.

What’s your current favorite Lomograph, yours or a friend’s?

As I said earlier, I am still a beginner but I definitely like the work of @kmonk . I do not know him personally but he’s my fellow countryman and he makes amazing pictures.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I would like to find new friends with the same interests as mine and learn something new about Lomography. Everyday I visit the site and see a lot of pictures. I hope that one day some of my pictures will allow me to go on a long journey around the world.

Thank you Yuri for sharing your thoughts with us. Welcome to the community and we’re looking forward to seeing more of your work!
