Simeon Smith Shoots with the LomoKino

Several months ago, Simeon Smith recorded all the bleeps, whirs, clanks and snaps that analogue cameras make. He then used these samples to create rhythms and textures for his music. He has since ventured into other projects, and recently made a music video using the LomoKino and an Actionsampler.

Learn more about the musician and his project in this short interview.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I live in South Wales and try to spend as much of my time as possible on the beach with my kids and with a coffee in my hand. I make electronic music, and help run a community recording studio at a local youth drop-in center.

How was it shooting with the LomoKino?

It was great fun. I watched a lot of videos shot on it, and decided that the simplest ideas with a lot of movement seem to work best. The variable aperture slider works great, and the lens wide open is beautifully soft.

You also used some Actionsampler shots in this video. How did you do this?

It was a simple but time consuming process of cropping 4 photos out of each frame and sequencing them in iMovie. In order to get them looking as detailed as possible I took the film into my friendly neighborhood lab (Colliers in Swansea) and explained to Neil what I was going to do so he scanned it at the highest quality. I love how the slightly different exposure on each frame looks with sequenced shots on the Actionsampler.

What for you is the appeal of analogue photography?

I just really enjoy the sensory experience – mechanical cameras feel so real. I spend too much time with technology that I don’t really understand and can’t really engage with; I get technological angst. But with analogue photography I feel free.

Any future projects?

I’m currently producing the debut EP for a local singer songwriter called Elly, she’s so amazingly talented and comes up with beautifully simple but really deep songs. I’m also about to start work on the soundtrack for the new round of Spotlight documentaries about Swansea.
