LomoGuru of the Week: Why-yu

18

She’s someone who is no stranger when it comes to Soviet-era vintage cameras, in fact she exclusively shot with them some time ago, and had her hiatus. Until recently, she gained much energy to pick up a camera and use film again! So, what made her come back? A lot! And one of them is Lomography, without a doubt! Get to know more about Yulia as she is our latest Guru for this week!

Full Name: Yulia Rusanova
LomoHome: http://www.lomography.com/homes/why-yu
Location: Russia, Rostov-on-Don
Number of years as a Lomographer: I began to shoot with my Smena 8m, Fed and Zenith… 10 years ago. Then had a break until two years ago when I started to use film cameras again… and just film! Now I shoot every day and can not stop! Haha! It’s never enough.
Number of years in the Community: Almost a year.

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

I recall, that was a few years ago, when I first signed up. For me it was a shock – so many great photos and all in film! WOW! I was so glad that so many people love film as much as I do! And of course, I also remember the people who first supported me and I can even remember some of their albums that I saw the first … I admire these Lomographers, I think that they are very interesting and that each of them has their own unique flamboyant style!

Have you actually met people in the Community whom you consider as close friends now? If yes, name at least one of them.

Of course I’m in touch with some of Rostov’s Lomographers (red_constructor, asimptot, lucafilin) we share experiences, help each other, sometimes even exchange cameras and do doubles.

I have recently met on Moscow Expo with some Lomographers unfortunately it was very fast. And it was with some really good Lomography fans (gotoarizona, grad, hey_god, mcrstar, nastya_shishova, plavaliznaem). In real life I do LomoWalks with pavel_px — many thanks to him! We even did an exhibition with him and with one Lomographer from Belarus as well – 1122, to Moscow rock club.

Of course I so much want to meet friends from other countries with whom I communicate with almost every day. They are really interesting people, and I am grateful to the Community that I could know them here. I think that through Lomography you can get to know people very well, it’s almost like a diary in which a person is writing every day .. through pics you can grasp stance and preferences, even people’s feelings. And so when I see these people in real life – I have an impression that I knew them for ages.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

I think – YES! Definitely! Because I love film and these cameras, and I hope I will be able to experiment and do something very interesting with them.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

For me there is no perfect camera. I can not name one, my first love is Smena 8m, it has its own unique character. The LC-A is very useful in an urban environment and it’s really a very suitable camera for traveling. Also, I like medium format – but still can not stop at one – everything is from the mood (usually – Holga or Lubitel) and I love pinhole too.

Usually in my bag there are a few cameras. But it was a funny incident when I broke down all three cameras that were with me (Holga, LCA and Smena), and even a tripod! I was shocked but it all ended well for they are still working!

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

I think you need to know the technical part (shutter speed and aperture) and it is very easy to learn with the Smena 8m. And trust your feelings, don’t be afraid to experiment, try to do interesting things, do not stop on what you succeed. Sky is the limit! And of course – do not follow the rules!

They are the ones whose passion transcends not only by what they do and say, but also with what they see and capture with their film cameras. And with such attributes aforementioned, they are what we call LomoGurus! Every week, we get to ask questions and reveal some insights with the most talented and productive of all Lomographers from the Community!
