OK, test roll #2...it turns out 800 ISO is too much for bulb mode so I lost about half the roll to overexposure. But, my careful masking of the film chamber inside rather than taping over the lens paid off. And I did a better job taping up the edges of the cameras so no light leaks this time. I think Portra 800 might be a good contender for this technique but it's a bit tricky to know what the redscale side will need. And keep in mind that these are all hand held too. I will do some more with both Portra 400 and 800 and see if I can dial it in better in future rolls but I'm thrilled with these results so far.
