Past expiration date

Bought a batch of what turns out to be really expired Ektachrome 100 EPP film. Negs are nearly black and very tough to scan. All ideas to improve results are welcome!

I've got some similar film in assorted poorly aged condition. The things I've done to improve the shot quality include over exposing more (1 stop per 10 years is my general rule), developing them in some BW developer first before the color developer or instead of the color developer, blix/bleach/fixing longer, and if you have the means to do so, you can sometimes bring out more in the shots by adding your own backlight. I have a cheap LED video light that I put a diffuser on and can lay really dark film on and scan or shoot off that. It sometimes helps. Otherwise, the fun vibrant colors are actually part of the fun of it. :D

@alienmeatsack Thanks for all the suggestions! I have tried most of them, overexposing, longer bleach/fix times, stronger light source for scanning, mostly to no avail. But I am interested to see what happens using BW dev before the normal c41 process. Do you have some examples of that out here?

I think the best results I got are in this album: www.lomography.com/homes/alienmeatsack/albums/1990829-dekta…

I shot the film normally (for expired film) then developed it in the color developer, then Dektol (since it's strong) and then finished in Blix... Some of the color vanished but I got way better results then some of my other expired films that were heavily fogged or so expired they didn't work at all.

Also this roll @sandravo was also done similarly except I did the Dektol first, then the C-41 Developer. I found that doing the Dektol or similar strong BW developer first tends to turn the images more into BW, so you'll want to try the BW after you've run it through the C41 developer. Make sure to rinse the living daylights out of it so none of your BW developer ends up contaminating your C41 Developer.

@alienmeatsack Very interesting! Using the BW after C41 does look more promising, keeps more colour in the images. I will give it a try, for sure.
