LomoGuru of the Week: Emilios

He shoots with film not only for the sake of being called a Lomographer, he does it for no one in particular but for himself. It is for this one simple reason that keeps him motivated and he’s very kind to show us a glimpse of what it’s like to be inside of a LomoGuru’s passionate soul!

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

It has to be winning the Rip Curl Pro Bells competition and the trip to Australia. There were so many great pictures submitted and to be the one to win it was a great surprise. Taking pictures of Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning , Bethany Hamilton and the rest of them was a lifetime experience.

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

I’ve met golfpunkgirl (Liana) and adamscott quite a few times when I used to live in London mainly because I used to drop off my films at the Lomography Store close to Carnaby Street. The people in the lab didn’t like it very much whenever I had double sprockets to scan. But both of them are really cool people and just recently, Liana had a baby so congrats to her.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

I have been an analogue photographer for more than a decade and I don’t think I will ever stop. So I see no reason why I should quit Lomography in the next 5 or 10 years. Just as long as there is constant supply of film I will keep shooting.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

My beloved Holga. First time I used it was back in the 90’s when my Dad bought it from a stand on the side of a road. But generally it is such a versatile camera, from shooting double sprockets to macro and panoramas. But by far the things that I enjoy the most are the soft focus and vignettes I get throughout my pictures. This “cheap” plastic camera is a real gem and puts a lot of modern day cameras to shame.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Without bashing digital photography I am pretty confident to say that if you are shooting analogue then you are on the right path. Personally at this modern age, I cannot think of anything else tangible that gives me greater joy than film (girlfriend doesn’t count). And as an advice I just want to stress out that you are not taking pictures for anyone else but yourself. Whether people like or dislike your pictures is completely irrelevant. What is important for me is that smile you get on your face when you go through your results.

They are the ones whose passion transcends not only by what they do and say, but also with what they see and capture with their film cameras. And with such attributes aforementioned, they are what we call LomoGurus! Every week, we get to ask questions and reveal some insights with the most talented and productive of all Lomographers from the community!
