Cannes, first Day

“toto, we are no longer in Kansas”

It feels cliché to start like this but the first feel in Cannes is that you are no longer in Paris…. Parisians would say “well, duh!”, except Parisians don’t say duh….. anyway, here it’s different, the sun is shining and everything is more shinny.

we started the festival with “Pina” by Wim Wenders and MY GOODNESS what a START. Saying that the movie does justice to Pina Bausch is probably the best compliment you can pay the movie. I only had the privilege of seeing one representation by her company and sadly I never got to see her play Café Muller. However; I do feel privileged that cameras were around to capture her work as a testament to humanity….

Pina Bausch’s choreography was infused with emotion and in her own words she transmitted “through dance what words are not able to express”. Therefore it is futile to write here what I felt while watching this movie. I may only say that I cried, twice, had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up and felt a wide range of emotions through the movie. So go see it and feel it for yourselves.

On a technical note, this was the first movie in which 3D did make sense for me, in spite of still getting a head ache….

To go see the openings, now that is a whole new story….. you have to almost fight to get in. Tomorrow we get to go see “The Tree of Life” the movie EVERYONE is talking about…. and on Wednesday I get to go up the ‘marches’ for the big opening of " Melancholia"…… at 8 in the morning!! still super excited!
